New songs

So I made a song and a huge mentor of mine suggested that it sounded like indy game music, so I went with that theme…

Future high court- the hero would return to the kingdom and be bestowed honor, in a very Tidus Andronicus way. A tired hero of war returning to the city of his birth.
Hero’s Journey- where the game would start. Usurpers of the throne have turned against the government and our loyal hero. They wish to publicly execute him and make an example of the old regime’s passing. Luckily our main character would have a loyal friend that aids him in escaping the city confines.
The first piece our hero finds since returning. The forests of his homeland have a special place in his heart, and he’s reminded he can’t return home.
Deep in the forest are caves, that may or may not be inhabited. They provide shelter for the moment.

GPU prices in 2020 (pt.2)

In a previous article, I explained the woes of GPU pricing. I personally have been considering switching to AMD and I think it deserves follow up.

When pricing any hardware, it’s important to compare cost to performance. In this case, the performance point is my current card – A GTX 1080.

A 1080 used to be pretty close to the top, but not anymore. Here’s a look at the top GPU performers as of Feb 23rd 2020

What really catches my eye in this second chart is the Radeon RX 5700 XT. It’s not the absolute best, but it’s a damn good value when it comes to bang for your buck.

I used to hate Radeon software, but I haven’t really used it since before AMD Acquired ATI. One of our discord members brought up Nvidia Shadow play, but AMD has their own version of ReLive software. I’m not a die-hard anything, so I’ve been on the fence about switching up, and I know plenty of folks that would be happy to have a gently used 1080- If I bought a RX5700XT, I’d buy a pair, since I am crunching AI, rendering videos and so on.

What do you guys think? Let me know in the comments below.

GPU Prices in 2020

GPU prices in 2020 look oddly similar to those in 2019. Now is a painful time to buy if you want a higher-end card.

But why? The crypto gold rush in Dec 2017- Jan 2018 is all but over…. If bitcoin price has fallen why are card still so crazy expensive?

Bitcoin and cryptocurrency has been labelled a bubble by mainstream news outlets, but regardless of how it’s been covered in the news, it’s made an impact in the market. Yes, it’s worth half of what it was at its peak to date, but it’s only a loss if you sell, and it’s clearly here to stay.

Some people that saw the value blow up, decided at that point that it was a worthy investment opportunity. They’ve made their bets, invested in GPUs and are mining cryptocurrency. Combine that with increased relevance of AI and deeplearning, and video rendering, and you have a steady demand curve for intense computing power.

Unfortunately GPU prices will likely stay elevated for the foreseeable future, because the demand for them is not dropping anytime soon.

So I did a couple things.

Tech with Tim (youtube) has a great tutorial on writing a chatbot in python. I did that, and it’s the first piece of working code I’ve written, which is a big accomplishment for me.

Last month I bought a cheat synthesizer and made a tacky song in Audacity. While it’s a versatile program, it’s not the greatest DAW. Being an Idiot, I’ve shied away from DAWs and how complicated they can be, until this week. I installed LMMS and I made it make noise, and now there’s a link in the footer to my soundcloud, which was basically dead until now.

I’m due to edit another video for DuoTV, and I have yet to dig into the footage, but I’ve replaced my editing NVMe SSD (my 300 gig intel went toast last year) and sooner or later I’ll likely purchase DaVinci Resolve or something similar so I can do fully featured editing. Normally I speak SIP, but there are so few people that do- and we’re trying to run a production company here.

AMD is killing it!

I was kicking myself when I bought AMD at $12— see in 2016 AMD was around $3 a share. Now that was before Spectre, Meltdown. In 2016 the CPU market was in a lull, after many iterations of the same i7s vs the FX series- consumers were unimpressed.

Fast forward to today- and you can see in the graph, Ryzen and Thread-ripper have lived up to their expectations. As enterprise applications move to container-centric environments and virtualization becomes commonplace, threads and cores matter more and more.

AMD is absolutely dominating the consumer market, and at a price-point. Having just tested a middle of the road AMD APU (Ryzen 3400G) in a system with no video card, I wont be switching to (or recommending) Intel any time soon!
